summer night city...

Ready to disco?? On Friday night, despite my horrific cold, Heidi and I were off to Summer Night City (AKA Ravinia - is that not perfect? ) for the music of ABBA, courtesy of our friends Arrival from Sweden. I love me some ABBA, and I guess lots of other people do, as well, because they were ALL jam packed into the parking lot and sprawled on the lawn at Ravinia that evening! Because really? This is perfect summer music - light and happy, singable, danceable and just plain clap your hands to the beat fun. The gift shop also got into the spirit of the event, displaying completely awesome sequined cowboy hats that had lights on their brims, in addition to jelly rings, bracelets and other assorted light up accessories.

We had seats in the pavilion, but I would wager that the real disco dance party was on the lawn. Everyone in the pavilion were strangely sedate, like aliens had descended into Highland Park and replaced all of the concert-goers with pod people - I mean, have you EVER been to a pop or rock music concert where everyone politely stays in their seats for the entire thing? At the U2 concert, as soon as the band hit the stage we were on our feet and we stayed there for the entire show.
Here, everyone sat calmly. The familiar strains of Mamma Mia got everyone going a little bit, and towards the end of the show, the crowd got up and danced to Take a Chance on Me (And I mean, everyone in the crowd which was like, huh? I didn't know that this song was that huge. I like it a lot, but I thought for sure some of the other songs would have been more of the crowd pleasers) and also Dancing Queen. But the rest of the time - everyone stayed in their seats. I don't usually attend pop music events at Ravinia, are they always like that?? Is it because donors snap up the tickets first and they tend to be older (and richer, with disposable income?) ? Is it because the original ABBA audience from back in the day is also considerably older now and less inclined to get up and boogie? Or what? Last year, they had a dance floor right in front of the stage, but they didn't do that this year (too bad!). Don't get me wrong, the audience was appreciative and all, it was just a little startling that everyone just sat there, stock still. I was dancing in my seat and clapping and singing along (as best I could. I'm losing my voice, thanks to my cold!) and I would totally have gotten up if everyone else had been doing that. Are people worried they will block the view of people behind them? That wouldn't be a problem if everybody was up and dancing! This isn't a Tony Bennett concert here, people!

Okay, sorry. Arrival from Sweden are lots of fun. There are four of them, playing Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frieda (So really, they should be ABBF or maybe FABB) and they wear costumes identical to the ones ABBA really wore in their concerts. So naturally, they are completely awesome in a hilarious, 1970s kind of way. The group even sounds a lot like ABBA, and they filled their two hour concert with all of the group's greatest hits.

(This picture unfortunately does not do justice to the costumes, especially the crazy boots that everyone was wearing! Our "Benny" was sitting at the piano wearing high heeled sparkly boots! And the girls had on, at one point, above the knee white go-go boots - call me a boot bitch if you must, but they were adorable!) I have to say, I was devastated that I was not able to sing along with all of my favorites, but it was still a great night for this aging and rapidly decaying dancing queen. Just wait until next year...

friday night & the lights are low...

First, came Mammia Mia in NYC last month...

Tonight, our Swedish-style musical adventures continue, with the music of ABBA performed by Arrival from Sweden at Ravinia! Woo!

Get your disco on, ladies!!!! Jelly rings, check! Swedish fish, also check!

See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen! Unfortunately, the dancing queen has to bring along like an entire box of kleenex and bag of lozenges with her, as she has fallen a bit under the weather. Damn. The dancing queen has gotten kind of old. But neither rain nor sleet nor summer cold will keep her from dancing and singing up a storm tonight!

just one look and i can hear a bell ring...

We arrived in NYC last Monday and stayed until Thursday morning. I wanted to cram the visit as full of stuff as possible, including shows. I was a little worried, because although I personally see no problem with spending my days in darkened theaters, my dear friend might not have agreed with my plans. As I planned the trip, my list of must-sees dwindled - mainly because so many of them closed in the meantime - A Little Night Music (we were a few weeks too early to see Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch take over in this show.), God of Carnage and Sondheim on Sondheim were a few on my list that closed before we got to town. I also wanted to see American Idiot, La Cage, Promises, Promises and Everyday Rapture. The nerd in me wanted to go to the Addams Family to see what had been changed since I saw it here in Chicago. So much to see, so little time. In the end, we decided on two - Mamma Mia! (one of the rare shows open on Monday) and American Idiot.

I love, love, love, love, love, Mamma Mia! I've seen it twice here in Chicago, the first time was at the Auditorium Theater and the second, last January, in Rosemont, and I just love it to pieces. I'd been wanting to see it on Broadway, just because I thought it would be a great evening of big, splashy fun.

And it was. The cast was wonderful, the best I have seen, and included Beth Leavel as Donna. She was amazing. She sang her face off, she was hilariously funny. The rest of the cast was good as well and included John Dossett as Sam - he also played Herbie in the Bernadette Peters Gypsy - I was so sure I recognized his voice from somewhere, and after a phrase in "Knowing Me, Knowing You" I was like "Herbie!!" I had been a little nervous about our Sophie, as her bio indicated she'd been on the recent national tour - and the Sophie we saw in Rosemont SUCKED a whole bunch - but it was not this girl, Natalie Gallo, who was a fantastic Sophie.

The plot, let's face it, is completely ridiculous but WHO CARES? The music is happy, cheery froth, and there is nothing better than standing up at the end and singing "Waterloo" with the rest of the audience and the cast in their awesome metallic 70s gear. The thing that still bothers me, that I notice every single time, is the line in "Thank you for the Music" which is the original and goes "I've been so lucky, I am the girl with golden hair" when Sophie is not actually golden haired. I just sit there and go, no, you're not. The logo bride isn't golden haired either, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Is she singing "Thank you for the Music" as a song that she learned from her mom? But it seems to be delivered like the rest of the songs, as the character's dialogue, and the rest of it seems to fit - "mother says I was a dancer before I could walk..." etc. So I don't know. I guess it is not one of those things that we are supposed to think too much about.

It is such a feel good show, I left the theater on a cloud of ABBA-induced euphoria. How can I resist you, indeed.

the winner takes it all!

You didn't think I'd let this go, did you? No ABBA Tuesday after the awesome foursome was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame?? That's just silly. Just two members of the group were on hand to receive their honor (Benny and Frieda - so "AB", or technically "FB") so no big reunion piece there (boo).

And we WILL be back at Ravinia, come summertime, to pay homage to the group with our jelly rings and glitter lanterns, Swedish Fish (and EELS too!), with Arrival of Sweden in July (the day before the big Sondheim gala concert. Maybe I should just pitch a tent on the lawn??)

Get your disco on, people! Happy Tuesday!

my, my, how could i resist you?

Went to Mamma Mia yesterday afternoon in Rosemont - I had to miss my Colts who beat the socks off of those Jets, but que sera sera (They won!). Golly my goodness, I haven't been to the Rosemont Theatre since we opened the place with Barry Manilow all those years ago... It was a fun atmosphere, along with loud "ya-ta-da" carpet. The show was just fun. It's not deep or earth-shattering theater, but who cares? It was so much fun and everyone knows how much I loves me some ABBA. We had a very sedate audience though - at the end, there is supposed to be a singalong with Mamma Mia! Dancing Queen and Waterloo, and while everyone seemed to be on their feet, we were the only ones singing. Wassup with that, Rosemont?? Then we all trundled out of the theater, from the warmth of the Greek Isles into the snow (!) where we sat around for a really long time, waiting to get out of the parking lot. And now, I'll be broken-hearted, blue since the day we parted...

when life imitates ABBA....

Crazy craziness - we open a week from tomorrow (buy your tickets, already!) Things here are busy busy! So originally, I was going to make you work for your ABBA Tuesday video, since all of the good ones CAN'T be imbedded!

But youtube is being a massive pain in my ass and not linking this right, so here are your choices:
A.) you can try going here for today's selection - which is the best video. If it doesn't work go to you tube and search Abba Under Attack for the real selection.
B.) Eschew my ABBA Tuesday and look for your own video. Whatever floats your collective boats, babies. All I'm trying to do is bring a little joy in the form of Swedish pop into your lives. or
C.) Watch the below. Same song, but live version that is embeddable. It's much fun for many reasons.

bjorn again...

Our friend Bjorn wrote Does Your Mother Know. In the Mamma Mia! book, he muses on the song, and says "This song has me singing the lead - to be honest, I don't know why. I really don't like listening to myself singing... I'm not a singer, but it can be an interesting exercise sometimes. My voice is not bad, and it's even a bit charming in a song like "Does Your Mother Know," I think."

In the movie, Mamma Mia! Christine Baranski's character (Patsy? No wait, I'm getting confused) cougar-ed it up and sang the song to a flirty young guy, but Bjorn says it's not supposed to be all creepy, 'what's up, little girl, does your mother know that you're out?' "I had the idea of reversing the situation (of an older guy-younger girl relationship) and creating a song about a man who, instead of trying to pick up a girl, turns round and says "Oh, does your mother know that you're out" (but not in a creepy way!). "And I also know this phrase "Does your mother know" which I'd come across in a book or magazine and it fitted so well with the overall idea."

Straight from the horse's mouth. Happy ABBA Tuesday!

ABBA Tuesday - Take a Chance on Me...

"You can't sing that backing vocal in one go. That's impossible. No, no, no, no, you do have to breathe." - Benny Andersson

sing a new song, chicken tikka...

Welcome to ABBA Tuesday! Today, for your listening pleasure/amusement, I give you "Chiquitita." There is a much more amusing video on YouTube, where the Swedish Fab Four are singing this with a snowman (!?) in the background, apparently for a Christmas special, but I couldn't embed it here. There is also a brilliant Mamma Mia! movie parody by the wonderful & fabulous Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders that features a great take on this song, but I can't embed that either, but it's worth a poke around on YouTube to find it. Hillarious. Almost as funny as that Xmas special footage. Seriously.

ABBA recognized that this song was not like the other pop music that they had so far been doing (this one comes from January 1979, I was a little over a month old!) but Benny Andersson notes, in the book "Mamma Mia! How Can I Resist You" "You should never be afraid of trying out weird stuff because that's when it becomes music & something worth listening to, rather than always following the mainstream."
